The PhD programme forms part of an EPSRC funded project with several industrial partners.
It involves investigations into techniques to increase the capacity of existing overhead lines through voltage uprating without the requirement for new lines.
The work will involve overhead line design optimisation through insulation coordination studies which include assessment of overvoltages, voltage control and protection using surge arresters.
The project will involve computer simulations, laboratory and field tests.
The studentship is open to home/EU or overseas candidates. It will provide an annual stipend at the EPSRC level (£12,300 for) and will cover tuition fees at home/EU rate for three years.
Candidates will be expected to hold a good (2.1 or above) undergraduate degree in engineering or another relevant subject.
Applicants will also be expected to demonstrate an aptitude and enthusiasm for research.
