The International Livestock Research Institute's (ILRI) People, Livestock and Environment (PLE) research theme seeks to recruit a senior livestock-environment scientist to lead research relevant to improving smallholder livelihood opportunities in a sustainable way, and the related environmental challenges in market led intensifying livestock systems.

Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

This position requires someone with a sound livestock research background, and the ability to engage with environmental research groups, as well as to contextualize research in relation to dynamic livelihood issues.

The successful candidate will be expected to initiate, foster and maintain partnerships with diverse stakeholders, especially those concerned with livestock research.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • A PhD in livestock or environmental sciences and at least five years experience in livestock research and development in developing countries.
  • A sound systems perspective, especially related to the challenges of environmental issues with indepth knowledge and recognition internationally in this research area
  • A good understanding and ability to communicate on diverse livestock related issues in different parts of the World with broad understanding of livestock research for development issues as they relate to developing countries
  • Proven success in field based research, mobilizing resources, managing finances, and developing partnerships.
  • Good publications record with strong written and oral communication skills in English
  • Skills in leadership, inter personal interaction with demonstrated ability to lead and manage teams and to work in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams in developing country environments
