Volunteer at Kambui School for the Deaf (Kiambu, Kenya)

Kambui School for the Deaf is located in Kambui, Kiambu district in Kenya. It offers School facilities for the deaf / hearing disabled. It also offers a vocational training centre and livelihood programme.

Kambui School for the Deaf is the largest resident school in Kiambu. It has a long waiting list due to its proximity to Nairobi. Vocational training is offered in hair styling, knitting, tailoring, metalwork, cooking and carpentry/joinery.

Students in upper primary and vocational training do computer training in the afternoon.

Of the over 30 million population in Kenya, about 700,000 are deaf or hard of hearing. There are 37 primary schools for the Deaf and 4 vocational schools.

Due to lack of enough Secondary Schools for the Deaf many Deaf students return home after class 8. They are unable to proceed to secondary school and may end up doing vocational training.

The few who attend secondary school are unable to proceed to post secondary institutions since they do not cater for the deaf.

Volunteers at Kambui School for the Deaf assist in:

  • Teaching
  • Assistant teaching
  • Training of Teachers
  • Helping with the Deaf
  • HIV/AIDS education

Volunteers can also engage the students in inspirational discussion and advice them on various issues. Volunteer teachers can also help coach in sports such as football, volleyball, netball, badminton, tennis and athletics.

It would be beneficial if you had some experience with sign language or working with the deaf but most importantly we need highly motivated volunteers with energy and enthusiasm.
