Joint Admission Board of Kenya (JAB)

This is the body that is mandated to conduct a joint admission exercise of students who have cleared secondary school into the Universities. The main aim is to ensure that only those who have attained a certain number of points are given priority to join the universities under a government sponsorship. The admission exercise is done annually at the beginning of every academic year and students who sat their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E.) the previous year are the ones considered.

Cluster Points

The board usually meets after the release of K.C.S.E to determine the cut- off points to join public universities. At the beginning the cut-off point was C+ which has now risen to a mean grade of B due to the increasing number of candidates who sit for K.C.S.E.

There are three levels of authority in JAB.

Top Level

At the top level of the Joint Admissions Board (JAB) is the Committee of Vice-chancellors, responsible for ensuring all policies and procedures are followed, in addition to dealing with difficult ad-hoc admission cases. The Ministry of Education representatives participate at this level to ensure that national policies are incorporated into JAB decisions.

Second Level

The second level is the Deans Committee that comprises deans/directors of all faculties/ schools/institutes in the respective public universities. It is the deans who receive the output of the JAB system and accept the qualified students in their respective faculties/ schools/institutes. This is done in a transparent manner. The deans also make recommendations on various policies, procedures and matters that are pertinent to the admission process.

Third Level

The third level is the Joint Admissions Board (JAB) Secretariat, a combination of bureaucrats and ICT technical staff who run and maintain the JAB IS as well as administering the JAB process.
