Environmental Health Intern in Kenya - IRC

Location: Kenya

Under the supervision of the Environmental Health Manager, Kakuma, the EH intern will assist in implementation of Environmental Health program and providing technical EH support to the national programs.

S/he will assist in coordinating EH with other health programs, including Communicable Diseases, Community health, and Emergency Planning.

Qualifications:

  • University degree in public health/environmental health/civil engineering or related courses,
  • Excellent writing Skills.
  • Strong community development, mobilization, and sensitization skills
  • Previous experience working in a community-based sanitation program
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in WATSAN
  • Willingness to work in a remote, difficult, insecure, and unaccompanied post
  • Proficient computer skills necessary to effectively utilize word processing, database, and spreadsheet software systems.

    Responsibilities

    Program management and implementation

  • In coordination with the health coordinator and the environmental health manager, participate in the development of Environmental Health sub sector strategy and work plans
  • Participate in the supervision, implementation and monitoring of Environmental Health project activities in line with proposal targets and work plan timelines
  • Assist in planning and carrying out assessments of Environmental health in IRC’s current and new project sites
  • Liaise with the IRC community health outreach to develop a training program for community based hygiene promotion and implement BCC Strategies in Hygiene promotion
  • Assess potentials for community participation in project design, implementation, management, and evaluation, including cost recovery, and help establish community self-management structures
  • Assist in the response and management of any disease epidemics in the camp and participate in the development of disaster preparedness systems.

    Communication and Coordination

  • Attend Environmental health meetings both in field sites ensuring proper documentations and filling of the minutes
  • Maintain update project files and essential statistical data.

    Program development

  • In consultation with the EH Manager, Identify new program possibilities in collaboration with field- and Nairobi-based program staff
  • Actively participate in the development of new proposals by senior management and program development staff as required and edit drafts prior to submission to Nairobi.

    Monitoring and evaluation

  • Ensure appropriate M&E activities are carried out regularly (data collection & analysis, monitoring of project progress against established work plans, monitoring of established indicators and utilization of results to inform program (re-)design)
  • Identify gaps in M&E systems and make recommendations for improvements.
