Director General AMREF

The African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) is an international organisation headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. It provides high-quality and affordable health care to those who need it most. Working closely with African communities and governments, AMREF ensures that its health projects are relevant and sustainable.

An important part of AMREF’s work is the provision of emergency medical support through its flying doctors service. In addition, the Outreach Programme supplies specialist medical care to remote areas. It has trained over 500,000 health workers and reaches nearly 60 million people in Africa annually.

A sophisticated, seasoned and inspiring leader is needed as the next Director General, to guide AMREF’s development and articulate its common purpose. This person must be an accomplished manager of people at headquarters, but also command the respect of colleagues on the Board and in the Country and National Offices.

As a visible external spokesperson for AMREF, the Director General will work to ensure that its profile and overall visibility are increased at a global level.

AMREF is seeking a Director General with vision, diplomacy, intellectual breadth, and profound operational experience. The successful candidate will have led a large, complex and multi-cultural organisation. Understanding the global public health architecture and health systems strengthening will be important. Stature and the respect of leaders in the health community will be crucial.

Candidates with an appropriate health or medical professional background are strongly preferred. African candidates who possess the relevant leadership experience are especially encouraged.
