Database Programmer - Kenya (APHRC)

Employer: African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC)

Deadline: June 11, 2008.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design data entry screens
  • Test and correct errors in existing data entry screens
  • Design relational databases, tables, views and stored procedures for new research projects
  • Train Data Entry Clerks and address programming issues encountered during data entry
  • Write Views to retrieve data for analysis and convert data to formats required by researchers
  • Coordinate and monitor quality control measures, including double data entry activities
  • Design and update programs to generate various reports from the database
  • Produce regular data entry performance indicators
  • Enforce and monitor consistency checks in the data base
  • Perform basic data cleaning in the data base following data entry
  • Manage the SQL data base
  • Support Data Entry Clerks supervisors in managing the data entry process
  • Perform general administrative activities in the absence of the Data Manager

    Essential:

  • A BSc. degree in Computer Science or in a data and information management related discipline. Non-graduates with extensive knowledge and experience of programming in Visual Basic 6.0 and SQL will be considered
  • Good understanding of MS Windows programming
  • Object Oriented Programming skills using Visual Basic 6.0
  • Experience in designing and developing large relational databases preferably using Microsoft SQL server
  • Skills in SQL based programming especially for data manipulation
  • Knowledge of EPI-INFO or any other data management application
  • Good communication and supervisory skills

    Desirable:

  • Report writing skills
