Communications Officer (External Communication)

CBM is an international, Christian, disability and development organization committed to improving the quality of life of persons with disabilities.

Location: East Africa Regional Office, Nairobi

Time Frame: Two Years

Core Responsibilities:

  • Emergency Communications: Efficiently handle regional communications needs for internal and external stakeholders for any emergency related activities affecting the East Africa Region. In 2012-3, this will include supporting reporting, media activities and communications in relation to CBM’s engagement and response to the Horn of Africa food crisis.
  • Public Relations: Support CBM regional public relations efforts and partnerships.
  • Events: The focal person for events and special projects, supporting planning and taking responsibility for the development and implementation of non-routine events, functions and other regional Communications initiatives.
  • Capacity Development: Support planning and drive implementation of capacity development initiatives of the Communications Department for internal and external parties.
  • Media Relations: Under the guidance of the Communications Manager / Communications Director provide support in maintaining CBM AFE’s/CBM K’s relationships and engagement with the media.
  • As a member of the Communications team participate in the collection and documentation of various kinds of information (including pictorial) and consequently the development of regional communication tools and materials.
  • Effectively organize visits to the field by key stakeholders in the region, including CBM Member Associations.
  • Represent CBM in required forums and generate follow up reports and documentation
  • Bring initiative and creativity into Communications Department projects, including proposal development and writing.
  • Research, collation of information, and database development as required.

    Additional / Stretch Duties:

    In addition to the responsibilities outlined in section IV above, the incumbent may be called upon by his / her superior to perform ad hoc activities which are either by their nature related to his / her normal duties or evolve from operational requirements.

    Qualifications:

  • First degree in Communication, Public Relations, Media or related area.
  • Four years previous work experience in a similar position, preferably in an INGO.

    Competencies and Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal English.
  • Ability to prioritize work, and meet deadlines.
  • Good organizational capabilities with attention to detail
  • Good event management abilities
  • Ability to take responsibility for and lead processes
  • Ability and experience writing for different purposes.
  • Ability to integrate well in a multi-cultural and multi-disability environment.
  • Able to work effectively as a member of a team.
  • Computer literacy. Experience with use of Microsoft packages including Outlook, Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Access. Knowledge of creative design/publishing packages an advantage.
  • Photography skills an advantage.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally within the region, when required.
  • Ability to reflect CBM values in daily work.
