Program Manager

Key Responsibilities

  • Reporting to the Senior Director, Conservation Science, the Program Manager, Conservation Planning will have the primary responsibility to provide programmatic and technical support to AWF's Conservation Science unit.
  • He/she will lead development and application of AWF conservation planning tools ranging from Heartland Conservation planning, macro and micro level land use zoning, support AWF monitoring and scoping efforts, and document lessons and best practices.
  • The position holder will have strong knowledge of AWF's Heartland Conservation Process and will engage all pillars in the African Heartlands Program.

    This position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya.

    The successful candidate will;

  • Have 5 + years in conservation/development field.
  • Have direct experience in conservation or development work in Africa.
  • Have experience in engaging partners and other stakeholders in NRM planning
  • Have verified record participating in managing resources
  • Have participated in several forums and contributed to publishing at least one conservation plan
  • Be fluent in written English, French is an added advantage.
  • Have demonstrated knowledge and practice in systematic conservation planning.
  • Have acceptable knowledge of laws and regulations governing NRM management.
  • Have acceptable knowledge of ecological and development issues relevant to AWF's Heartlands Program approach
  • Have outstanding technical skills in at least one area of ecology and conservation
  • Have basic knowledge of relevant funding agencies.
  • Have ability to communicate effectively and to network strategically with a wide group of partners.
  • Have ability to fulfill mandatory AWF operations and financial procedures.

    Conservation Management Training Program

    CMTP is not an internship. It is a serious and competitive position where, over the course of two years, participants will gain real-world working experience and knowledge in their chosen fields of expertise.

    Candidate Qualifications

    To be considered a candidate for CMTP, the following qualifications are required:

  • Candidate is a recent master's degree graduate (within the last three years the CMTP start date) with studies focused on conservation science, environmental economics and policy, climate change, social entrepreneurship, conservation program design, and other related fields.
  • Candidate must have at least one year experience working on African conservation issues with a serious and proven dedication to Africa and AWF's mission.
  • Candidate will have superb written and oral skills. Fluency in English is required; fluency in French is a great advantage. Familiarity with other languages relevant to work in Africa (e.g. IsiZulu, Kiswahili, Maa, Fon, etc.) is also a major plus.
  • Candidate must be willing to re-locate to Nairobi, Kenya and proceed to at least one long-term assignment at an AWF Heartland project site during the tenure of the program.
  • Candidate must be a team player with high energy, a willingness to learn, a drive to succeed and can work with ease within challenging and culturally diverse environments.
