2016 UCE results released, overall performance worse than 2015

The Ministry of Education has released last year’s Uganda Certificate of Education Results. The Exams conducted by the Uganda National Examinations Board show a slight drop in performance in 2016 compared to 2015.

The drop is attributed to poor performance in English language, mathematics and the sciences.

Uganda National Examinations Board, Executive Secretary Daniel Nokrach Odongo said students performed science subjects poorly partly because schools are theoretically teaching science disciplines.

Non-universal secondary education schools put up a better performance than universal secondary education schools despite the poor performance in sciences.

While speaking during the release of the UCE results, Janet Museveni, the minister of education and sports, noted that it is disturbing that the quality of secondary school education in Uganda is still low despite government’s investments towards the improvement of performance in sciences.

The minister also regretted that teaching is geared towards passing exams and teachers no longer assess their students.

A total of 323,276 candidates registered for the exams, which were conducted in 3454 centers countrywide. About 316,600 sat for the exams while 6600 students missed. 366 special needs education candidates registered to sit for the exams.

Meanwhile the results of 1893 candidates from 86 examination centers were withheld.
